E.C. Barton & Company’s story began in 1885 at a grocery store in Jonesboro, Arkansas. After years of selling lumber as a sideline item to groceries, founder P.C. Barton eventually sold the grocery store and incorporated Barton Lumber & Brick. His son, E.C. Barton, grew the business by acquiring additional lumberyards.
Following the introduction of an Employee Stock Ownership Plan in 1975, the company experienced significant growth, including its development of the Surplus Warehouse brand, the acquisition of Grossman’s Bargain Outlet, the new Barton's Home Improvement and in 1993 the company became 100% Employee Owned.
Today, E.C. Barton & Company continues to be an employee-owned national building materials retailer that offers quality home improvement products and solutions at the guaranteed lowest price to help customers achieve their dreams. The company operates four divisions, Barton’s, Home Outlet, Grossman’s Bargain Outlet, Surplus Warehouse, and E.C.B. Brokerage - with over 100 locations in 17 different states from upstate New York to south Texas.
